YOURB
2019-21
“Yourb –
urban innovators” was a project ideated by the Print Club Torino team, which won financial support in the
public competition “Civica” of the Foundation Compagnia di San Paolo. I
coordinated the first edition (2020-21) and prepared educational content for
lectures and workshops with over 40 high school students.
The project aimed at raising teenagers’ awareness towards the issues of active citizenship by supporting them and making them protagonists in creating a social design format dedicated to the local community’s needs. Yourb’s goals included developing learning paths for sustainable education and teaching art and design students critical observation skills while involving fragile communities with unexpressed needs in the co-design process. It was crucial to show the role designers and artists have in today’s society and their impact on the community that surrounds them.
The first edition was divided into two parts: the methodological one held remotely (during the Covid-19 pandemic) and the practical one held in open spaces where students could easily express their creativity and collaborate with other fellows. More than 500 slides were produced for the 20 hours of “Yourb” remote lectures. All the material was collected in an open-access toolkit dedicated to educators who wish to apply design methodology in the context of social design laboratories at schools.
There are three topics that “Yourb” is focused on: Community, City and Local territory and Technology. The topics define the challenge of each edition, the matter that students will analyse using human-centred design methodology under the guidance of their lab tutors. The issues were argued in a detailed way during the methodological part of the course. Furthermore, eight professionals were invited to present their work on each topic to explain how social design may be applied in the students’ future work.
