“Le Cicogne fanno il nido sui tralicci” (“Storks build nests on pylons”) is a play produced as an outcome of the theatre lab organised by Teatro Stabile Bolzano in collaboration with Youth Centre Vintola18. The theatre lab took place from October 2023 till May 2024 and became a true challenge that each participant has chosen to undertake to discover something new about themselves. I was invited to contribute to the lab with a communication and storytelling project, capable of reflecting on the identity of the young people who participated in the journey and on the role they play in narrating the dreams of their generation.
The experience of theatre is intensely sensory because the body becomes a means to express a relationship: it is manipulated, altered, and exaggerated to tell the involved stories in a unique and evocative way. After several participatory sessions, where I had a chance to emerge in the theatrical reality, it was decided to develop a photographic narration highlighting the body as an object-message that, through its movement, represents the chaos and uncertainty characterising the transition of the young people towards the future. Mysterious and unknown profiles could represent anyone: a character from our distant past, the most important person in our life, or even someone we have yet to meet.
The participatory dimension of the storytelling was based on the direct participation of young actors in self-narration. Photographing them during the trials and organising an experimental workshop where their identities were further reworked and altered with graphic traits and collage images allowed the creation of a communication campaign that demonstrated to the public not only the final outcome of the lab, the play itself, but an intertwined and challenging process behind it.
On the occasion of the show’s premiere, a temporary installation was displayed in the foyer of the Teatro Stabile in Bozen-Bolzano on May 11th and, afterwards, inside the Youth Center Vintola18. Its design invited the public to have a glimpse of the theatrical backstage, where it is no longer clear where the reality ends and the show begins.
Participating actors: Chiara Christina Baumgärtel, Diego Bressan, Linda Di Spazio, Simone Facincani, Marko Nakov, Mahsa Naraghipour, Daslin Reiger, Andrea Rippa.
Curated by: Francesco Ferrara, Salvatore Cutrì, Elena Beccaro, Tessa Battisti
Setup production: Insalata Mista Studio (Matthias Pötz, Ada Keller)
