BIO

I’m an interdisciplinary researcher and practitioner working at the intersection of participatory design and more-than-human governance. I’m currently pursuing a PhD at Hasselt University in Belgium, where my research investigates new approaches to ecological democracy through the lens of critical design studies and environmental humanities.

With a background in visual and eco-social design, I’ve mostly worked on sociocultural projects: applying design research to questions of identity and language politics in border regions, co-creating participatory strategies for cultural initiatives, and facilitating public engagement in the reimagination of commons. In parallel, I maintain a strong ongoing interest in the roles of diasporas in academia and beyond.

ACERBA DIASPORA

2022-23

Self-initiated research project developed during the Master in Eco-Social at the Free University of Bolzano-Bozen.
‘Acerba Diaspora’ is a final Master’s research project born from a willingness to address a group of issues, including the South Tyrolean region’s structural ethnolinguistic division, the effects of immigration on the construction of local identity and the role of new generations, children of people with migration backgrounds, in shaping it. The research started with the study of the multicultural context of local high schools, aimed at a better understanding of the needs and wishes of young people. The first results showed that existing societal division is no longer relevant for them as they navigate multiple languages and mediate various cultures that span far beyond South Tyrolean and European borders. It was decided to design a project capable of activating an open and inclusive dialogue around the identity of Bozen-Bolzano, one in which everyone can feel represented, regardless of their origins and the languages they speak. With the help of design tools and by actively involving young people in the process, the first issue of ‘Gen-BZine’ – a (maga)zine about the new generations of Bozen-Bolzano – was launched. By playing with diverse languages that young people use daily, we collectively revisited the slang of the city, signed by the figures of speech coming from the most varied cultural backgrounds.

The 400 copies of (maga)zine were distributed for free with a copy of a local street magazine zebra.
